The following is a text alternative description for SNS Training Video: Hospital Bed Assembly.

[This training video provides a visual demonstration and instructions to guide the user through the process of assembling a Hospital Bed Assembly.]

Male Narrator: The hospital adjustable beds are delivered in tri-walls with a read label marked "Hospital Adjustable". It will take two people to assemble each bed. To assemble:

  1. First remove the beds from the tri-wall. All parts needed for set are contained within the bed.
  2. Stand the bed up on its side with the longest portion of the bed facing up and the two straps securing the bed should be chest high.
  3. Unlatch the straps which are located on each side of the bed. Please note that this bed has a frame portion and a bed portion so be sure to hold both sections as you lower the frame to the floor.
  4. Raise the legs then slide the hinge locking the lath in place on all four legs of the bed, this will keep the hinges locked and in place.
  5. Now remove the mattress by sliding it from underneath the frame.
  6. You will notice two large pockets under the bed. Those pockets contain six pieces, two of those pieces are necessary to complete the assembly of this bed.
  7. Remove each piece and place them to one side. When taking inventory of these parts you will notice that you have:
    • two adjustable arms,
    • two IV poles,
    • chart bag and a
    • removable tray table.
  8. Now, turn the bed over being careful to hold the be and the frame while doing so.
  9. In attaching the mattress you will notice that the bed and the mattress both have six (6) strips of Velcro that should line up.
  10. Now we will attach the adjustable arms. Please not that there are two adjustable arms and they are identical. One side of the adjustable arm has a notch. The section of the arm with the notch lines up with the bedframe. The other section fits into the tongue mechanism and to do this you have to be sure that the latch on the mechanism is pulled against the frame before sliding the adjustable arm into place. This piece allows for raising and lowering of the head and foot sections of the bed. If positioned correctly this section of the be should not be able to elevate or lower without the adjustable latch being pulled. Note: in order to release the adjustable arm, you must raise the safety latch.

This bed comes with two IV poles, which can be placed into one of the three holes at the designated head section of the bed. Also, included with the bed is a Chart bag. This may or may not be used but in order to assemble you simply tie it to either end of the bed or to the side of the bed. There is also a removable tray table included with each bed. These can be placed in a couple of different locations. There are holes near the foot and headboard, or you can set it up at the very end of the bed.

The following is a text alternative description for SNS Training Video: Westcott Bed.

[This training video begins with an image of three (3) fully assembled Westcott Beds. The video provides a visual demonstration and instructions to guide the user through the process of assembling a Westcott Bed.]

Male Narrator: Like the GUBs, the Westcott Beds are shipped in a tri-wall with a red label marked, "Westcott". These are a little more complex to assemble than the General Use Beds mainly because of the design of the frame. However, assembly can be completed by one person. To assemble the bed:

  1. First remove each bed from the tri-wall and unhook the clip located near the top of the bed.

  2. Place the bed flat on the floor and raise the leg portions toward the ceiling.

  3. Remove the mattress and place to the side of the bed.

  4. Note: The Westcott has six (6) hinges... two on each end and two in the center. Secure the hinges by pushing down using preferably your foot, or if you choose to use your hands, it's a good idea to wear gloves to avoid scratches, cuts or other accidental injuries.

  5. The Westcot is adjustable and is designed so that the frame and bed are in two separate pieces. Before turning the bed over, grab both sections and hold them together.

  6. Attach the mattress by securing the Velcro straps to the frame. Be careful not to secure the strap to the lower portion of the frame because this will impede your ability to lift the head or foot sections of the bed.

  7. The head portion of the bed can be moved to multiple positions and is equipped with a safety cord, the foot portion of the bed can be elevated by lifting it and extending the two plastic arms located under the frame. Fully extend both arms and place them on the bottom frame.

  8. The two piece IV poles are located on the end of each leg portion of the bed. Snap the two pieces together to complete assembly. Once assembled, the IV pole can be attached to either side of the head section of the bed frame.

SNS Training Video: Pallet Jack Operation

SNS Training Video: Pallet Jack Operation

Alternative Text for Time-Based Media

The following is a text alternative description for SNS Traini ng Video: Pallet Jack Operation.

[This training video features an unknown female using a manual pallet jack to lift and move a large pallet of materials from one location to another inside a warehouse while the narrator provides step by step instructions on how to safely operate it.]

Male Narrator: A pallet jack is a simple device that allow a person to pick up and move palletized loads over short distances. Pallet jacks are quite useful and can be found in most warehouses and at some construction sites. They are cheaper and easier to operate than forklifts, are generally safer than manual labor. Most pallet jacks can lift a little more than 7,000 pounds. However, the units found in our FMS have a fifty-five hundred (5,500) pound capacity. Pallet jacks come in two variations: manual and electric. This training will focus on the operational use of a manual pallet jack. This training will focus on the operational use of a manual pallet jack.

To use a pallet jack follow these steps:

  1. First, find the release lever which is typically found in the middle of the rounded handle.
  2. Position yourself in front of the handle and push the small lever up. This allows the pallet jack forks to drop to their lowest position.
  3. Now you are ready to push the pallet jack over to the items that need to be moved. Hand pallet jacks have a simple raise/neutral/lower operating method.
  4. With the forks already lowered slide them underneath the pallet that you're planning to move. Make sure you push the forks all the way through the underside of the pallet so that the wheels are resting on the floor and not on any part of the pallet.
  5. Once the forks are positioned underneath the pallet, push the actuating lever down, then begin pumping the handle up and down. You should feel some resistance and notice the forks slowly lifting the pallet.
  6. Continue pumping the handle several times so that pallet is clearly off the floor. A clearance of one inch between the floor and pallet is usually sufficient when moving a load.
  7. To move a load, engage the actuating lever in the neutral or middle position. This position disengages the lifting mechanism, making the handle free from hydraulic resistance which allow the forks to stay in the raised position.

When moving a pallet jack one might ask if it's more effective to push or pull the load. The answer is simply this; pulling a pallet jack increase the chances of you being run into by the pallet if you need to stop suddenly. By pulling, you also increase the possibility of injuring your lower back. That's why when the choice to push or pull a pallet jack arises, it's generally safer to push it. Also, when pushing you have better control to steer and maneuver away from obstacles and sudden stops are much easier to manage.

The following is a text alternative description for the video Dr. Gaither: NDMS Supports Urban Search and Rescue Teams.

Josh Gaither, a Medical Officer with the National Disaster Medical System, is shown in his NDMS uniform. Dr. Gaither begins to speak and the video continues this way the entire time.

My name is Josh Gaither. I'm one of the doctors down here with the Health and Human Services Disaster Medical Assistance Team or DMAT for short.

Our team is a group of physicians nurses and paramedics with a breadth of experience in all kinds of health care settings. We do everything from emergency care to surgical and ICU care. Because of our breadth of experience, we have the ability to operate in a lot of different settings.

For this deployment, one of those possible settings is to deploy in support of the urban search and rescue teams operating along the coastline. Those teams do have medical resources; however, they're limited and our team, having a larger medical complement, can deploy to support those search and rescue teams should they encounter large groups of patients or patients with special needs that require additional care after they've been extracted from the hazardous environment that they've been caught in.

The video continues with interviews of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medical Officers Dr. Paul Biddinger and Dr. Harold Fenster from inside a few of the mobile medical bases.]

Ron Piedrahita: I'm Ron with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Hurricane Michael has caused substantial damage to the Panhandle area of Florida and that damage includes several hospitals. HHS has established these mobile medical bases of operation outside of these hospitals to assist them with the medical care that their community needs. They're staffed by medical professionals from the National Disaster Medical System and these teams, Disaster Medical Assistance Teams, come from the country to help communities when the states request that help.

Dr. Paul Biddinger: We're set up in the Dr. parking lot of a hospital that has undergone sever damage in the storm. This hospital and the other hospital are the two hospitals in Panama City and they have lost all of their inpatient care and are trying to stay open with their emergency departments.

Dr. Harold Fenster: He cut himself with the chainsaw. Instead of suturing it closed, we debrided it meaning we took off the dead tissue. We irrigated it with an antiseptic solution and then I'm gonna pack it with a antiseptic solution in gauze.

Dr. Paul Biddinger: Both hospitals have been trying really hard to make sure they serve the community and have kept their emergency departments open, but this is quite a struggle given all of the challenges from the storm. We're here to help them.
